Staining and Aging Techniques
Below is a great article explaining how to age dolls, however the same techniques can be used on many other projects that you would like to age. http://www.creativetimesmagazine.com/tutorial/Staining+and+Aging+Primitive+Dolls
Creating and collecting primitive items has been a growing trend for several years now. Many people enjoy that aged appearance. There is no right way or wrong way to produce a prim item. It’s really a matter of preference. Some people prefer for items to look like they were nicely tucked away in Grandma’s attic chest with mild age spots here and there while others like the extremely tattered appearance of rugged play. Either can be achieved depending on various antiquing methods.
Coffee and tea staining are the most popular aging ingredients while walnut ink staining is growing in popularity. Occasionally, watered down brown or black tones of paint are used in place of stains.
Rubs add more antique charm to your items. Cinnamon is the most popular rub. However, tea or coffee grounds can be used for slightly different results. It might be fun to mix all of the rubs to see the primitive affect it will have.

Learning How To Sew
Continuing with last week’s theme about learning how to sew is the following related article: http://www.patternmart.com/article/Learning+How+to+Sew+In+5+Simple+Steps.
In the article, Susan explains how to learn to sew in a simple step-by-step procedure and explains where to seek possible help if self-teaching isn’t for you. I particularly agree with her ideas about beginning with simple patterns and how practice makes perfect.
Everyone makes sewing mistakes, even those of us with years of experience. ; ) Keeping that in mind, be sure to always have your seam ripper handy. That’s the main reason I believe it’s easier for you to begin with small projects because correcting mistakes is easier and quicker. I’d like to also point out that small projects are quickly finished allowing you to enjoy that sense of accomplishment faster.
A few fun, small projects that you might consider are pillows (as Susan suggested), potholders, pet quilts, and Christmas stockings. Vests and jumpers might be easy to start with if you’re considering articles of clothing, as they don’t have the collars or sleeves to fuss with.
I hope that you find this information helpful. To find a sewing project, go to www.patternmart.com.

Teach Yourself How To Sew
The following article is about one woman’s desire to learn how to sew. Click on the following link to read her inspiring story of how she taught herself to sew. http://www.patternmart.com/article/Home+Sewing+A+Forgotten+Pastime
If you have the desire to sew, you can probably teach yourself to sew as well. Begin with a second hand or other inexpensive sewing machine. Almost everything you need to know about sewing is in the sewing machine manual. If you purchase a second hand sewing machine and don’t receive the manual, many of those can be found on the internet by searching on the make and model of the machine.
Many of the patterns at www.patternmart.com include easy-to-follow instructions. Several free patterns are offered to help you get started. After you become familiar with the sewing machine and complete your first project, you will find yourself diving into another project almost immediately. The more you practice and the more projects you complete, the more you will enjoy sewing. If you’re like most of us, you’ll wind up with endless projects wondering when you’ll have time to finish all of them. Good luck and have fun!

I’d like to add that while browsing for fabric at yard sales as mentioned in the article that you might be on the lookout for sheets, bedspreads, tablecloths, towels, articles of clothing and other items made from fabric that you could use to make your projects from. Shamrock Patterns
It's two weeks until St. Patrick's Day. That's plenty of time to whip up a few shamrocks for the occasion. It's also a fun way to add a splash of Irish tradition all year around. After all, we can all use a wee bit o' luck associated with the shamrock, right? The three-leaf shamrock was used by St. Patrick to illustrate the Holy Trinity of the Celtic religion as he introduced Christianity to Ireland in the 5th century. The first St. Patrick's Day celebration in America was held in Boston in 1737. Visit www.patternmart.com for more shamrock and Irish patterns.
