The amount of squares you can cut from 1 yard of fabric depends, of course, on the size of squares you wish to cut from that yard. Below is a list of the approximate number of squares you can cut from a yard of fabric measuring 36” x 44”. Sometimes it isn’t possible to get the exact amount mentioned below due to possible imperfections in the fabric or the fact that you lose inches from fabric when you have to match up lines, plaids, checks, and such. It’s a good idea to purchase at least an additional yard to be sure you have enough to complete each project. Ü Next Wednesday, we’ll discuss how to determine the amount of squares you’ll need to complete quilt projects.
2” squares per yard = 396 squares
2 ½” squares per yard = 238 squares
3” squares per yard = 168 squares
3 ½” squares per yard = 120 squares
4” squares per yard = 99 squares
4 ½” squares per yard = 72 squares
5” squares per yard = 56 squares
5 ½” squares per yard = 48 squares
6” squares per yard = 42 squares
6 ½” squares per yard = 30 squares
7” squares per yard = 30 squares
7 ½” squares per yard = 20 squares
8” squares per yard = 20 squares
8 ½” squares per yard = 20 squares
9” squares per yard = 16 squares
9 ½” squares per yard = 12 squares
10” squares per yard = 12 squares
10 ½” squares per yard = 12 squares
