Fabric Cuts Part 1
Many people new to the sewing world may be confused about the difference between a fat quarter and a quarter of a yard. The difference is that a fat quarter is one of four equal pieces cut from an entire yard that measures 18” x 22” as seen below.
A ¼ of a yard measures 9” x 44” which is ¼ of the length (36”) x the full width (44”) as shown in the next picture. Join us next Wednesday for Fabric Cuts Part 2.

Christmas and the Crafter
What does Christmas mean for the crafter? Besides cooking the ham, decorating the tree and wrapping gifts, the crafter’s mind is probably thinking ahead to the upcoming spring holidays. After all, customers and friends will soon need gifts and decorations for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, and Easter. Spring craft shows are on the horizon, as well.
While others have visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads, the crafter has visions of bunny rabbits, chicks, bird houses, butterflies, flowers, hearts, shamrocks and pinwheels spinning in her head. If you haven’t started those spring crafts yet, you may be behind. So pull out those spring patterns & spring fabric prints. Start making those potholders, refrigerator magnets, table runners, pillows, totes, basket fillers and other needfuls your customers and friends will be looking for shortly after the New Year.

Doll Hair
There is a large selection of materials to make doll hair from. Yarn is the most common and comes in so many colors and textures. You can buy yarn in wool, cotton, polyester, and other blends. Embroidery floss is popular for use on small dolls and it, too, has a vast array of colors to choose from.
Pulled wool is great to use for Santa beards, sheep, and felted doll hair.
Many doll makers boldly use different colors outside of the normal red & burgundy tones for hair. Orange is fun to use on fall dolls & green for witch dolls. Below is a picture of a Shamrock doll with green floss hair, a Christmas doll with red & white floss hair, a shabby doll with pink floss hair & a granny doll with gray hair.
Doll hair can have any look you wish. If you are looking for different doll hair ideas you can download the following free tutorial. Over 1 MB of pictures and instructions are included in this tutorial. http://www.patternmart.com/pattern/3383/Doll+Hair+Tutorial+PM
